Sewing & Juicing

Except for doing repairs and making some adjustments, I haven’t sewn anything in a while. I’ve been in the mood to make a wallet or clutch or coupon keeper or whatever you’d like to call it. I chose this pattern ‘McCalls Fashion Accessories M6768’. I’m making the yellow wallet in the pattern photo; mine’s going to be greens & beiges. I’m going to attempt to go by the pattern as close as possible. It’s a real challenge for me to follow a pattern because I always want to make changes (and complicate things.) I hope this wallet works out okay. I’ll post an update and let you know if I made it or tossed it away.

P1030970Last evening, I had a brainstorm of an idea for my tomato juice. If I freeze it in water bottles, it’ll take up less space and can be thawed out for drinking and/or cooking just like the juice frozen in the bowls. My husband liked the idea too. So today after I made and cooled the tomato juice, I poured it in bottles and set it in the freezer. Hopefully it’ll do just fine.
*I’m going to edit this photo into my tomato juicing post as another idea for freezing containers.

That’s all for me at the moment.

I hope you all have an enjoyable rest of the week.

  1. I haven’t sewed anything in years. It’s fun to see the pattern pieces. I rarely follow knitting patterns anymore because I always want to make changes and Improvements. Sometimes my ideas don’t work at all! Have fun sewing 🙂

I usually use a pattern or instructions as a spring board to further my creativity. And like you said, sometimes it don’t work out at all… however it’s still fun trying. 🙂

  2. With sewing I have to follow patterns pretty carefully because I don’t know what I am doing, but with knitting that’s another story. 😉

Your tomato juice still looks yummy!

I find that in crafting or cooking, it depends on how confident I am in what I’m doing that determines if I’ll very much from directions. In crochet or sewing I rarely follow directions. In loom knitting I pretty much don’t vary from directions. In sculpting I pretty much free-hand it. Unfortunately, I’ve never made a project knitting with rods. Knitting with rods takes an extra level of talent and confidence that I’m not blessed with. You truly have a gifted level of talent to spin the yarn and knit with rods to create pretty projects. 🙂

      • I think you have nailed it – I am completely confident with knitting – and nothing is permanent, you can always rip and try again. With sewing, once you cut the fabric it get shard – so I have zero confidence! 🙂 Cooking, I usually will follow the recipe the first time, then adapt the heck out of it for ever more. 🙂

  3. I envy anybody who can sew. I have a nice sewing machine and I try to put it to use on occasion but I am just not very skilled with it. I know I just need practice, but it seems to always fall on the back burner.

Very clever idea, freezing the tomato juice in bottles in the freezer! I’d have never thought of that! We tend to not have much room in the freezer to freeze things from the garden so we can like crazy instead, since we’ve got sufficient cupboard space for canning everything. What things do get frozen, I have little silicone trays that each have fifteen 1-ounce cavities; I fill those up with whatever needs freezing, pop them in the freezer overnight then the next day take the cubes out of the tray and transfer them to freezer bags or freezer safe storage containers. I like to puree fresh produce (some things need steamed/cooked first of course, like leafy greens or sweet potatoes) and freeze it like this for smoothies, because I never seem able to actually use up the produce when it is fresh and I don’t like it to go to waste so this way I never have to worry about that. I can just grab a few cubes of whatever components I want for my smoothie, toss them in the blender with some water, juice, or milk, and blend away. No need for ice to chill or thicken them this way either, so it’s an all around win. Oh, I also freeze bacon and sausage grease this way so I can have it on hand for sauces and gravies. Much more convenient and extends the shelf life vs a grease saver or a mason jar in the fridge!

    • Hi CW
That’s a super great idea to freeze things in ice cube trays for easy measuring and handy use. It definitely would make for some delicious smoothies. You’re a wonderful cook and I bet you have some mighty tasty home-canned goods gracing your shelves.
You’re a multi-talented lady. You’re knitting and cooking skills are way above my learnings. I figure you could easily master sewing. It’s simple once you get the hang of it. I can just imagine the beautiful things you would create.
Hope you have a great weekend. 🙂

I wouldn’t win any contest. My sewing is less than perfect. Sewing and mending has been apart of my life as far back as I can remember. I wish you could enjoy sewing successfully.
I wish I’d of thought of using the bottles with my first batch. The single serving bottles are handy to store anywhere in the freezer. 🙂
