With the first cold night, I covered my volunteer Cherry Tomato vine with cheese cloth. Until Tuesday evening, I left the cheesecloth on the tomato vine 24/7. I checked the tomatoes and was delighted to see they’re turning. It won’t be long until we have some fresh tomatoes in November.
I’m going to leave the cheese cloth half-off of the vine until the weather turns cold again.
I figured it up and this is the second year on the volunteer tomatoes in that small bed, so it’s a wonder that the vine grew healthy at all. I hope the tomatoes have a good taste to them.
I am beyond tickled about these November tomatoes.
What a rare treat they are.

wow! That is great! I picked all mine, and am letting them ripen on the windowsill, but that last ones are slow to ripen and so are mealy, like the grocery store tomatoes. Next year I wont; be so quick to put the garden to bed. 🙂

It sounds like you had a good year for tomatoes. I wish I still had a window full of them.
These volunteers are a real surprise for me.
I’m going to keep an eye on the weather forecast and if it turns off too cold at night, I’ll pick these and bring them in.

I wish I still had plants! If you do pick them, pick the whole branch, they ripen better with stems for some reason.

Good idea. I’ll definitely do that if I need to bring them in to ripen.
Maybe next year you’ll have oodles of plants for a long season too. 🙂

I am not a fan of tomatoes but I do enjoy growing them so I can can them and make salsa and tomato sauce with them. It is a lot of effort making homemade salsa and sauce, what with all the veggies that need to be chopped and then peeling all the tomatoes etc but it’s so very worth it! Hopefully those late tomatoes are tasty so however you use them will be delicious!

I wish I had a volunteer cucumber vine, they would go great with my tomatoes in a salad.
My tomatoes are so pretty, I just can’t get over them growing and ripening in November. It’s a fun surprise. 🙂

Yes, some vegetables, especially cherry tomatoes may replant themselves by having so many fruits that they fully mature and fall off the vine. The tomato rots or a critter bites it open and the rain beats their seeds down into the soil. Sometimes if the seeds are deep enough a plant grows the next Spring or later in the Summer. 🙂

Unfortunately, sometimes no matter what we do, tomatoes may fail to thrive. At this time of year, in your region it could be too cold for tomatoes or it could be too dry if your region is in drought conditions.
