Fox Eggs

Remember my posts Mystery Egg 2-15-2017 and Turtle Egg 4-26-2017 well, I encountered another mystery egg. This one is buried in my cedar chest planter.It was the oddest thing. I was digging up some annual bulbs and replacing them with marigolds in my cedar chest planter, a few inches deep in the soil my hand touch something hard, round and smooth. There’s only store-bought soil in the upper part of cedar chest, so I knew it wasn’t a rock. I picked the object up, lo and behold it was an egg. Oh dear, why on earth was an egg buried there? Okay, this is getting bizarre. There’s no way this is a turtle egg because I can’t imagine a turtle scaling the cedar chest wall just to lay an egg.

As I reburied the egg, I wondered what mischief it could be? I even pondered on the idea of someone was tinkering around with a magic spell. Well, what would you think? :\

It was time for some internet searching to see if anyone knew what significance buried eggs have. I was amazed to see that there’s several other folks that have found eggs buried in gardens and flower pots.I learned that turtle shells are a leathery texture, so right away I knew that this one wasn’t one and I was wrong about the egg I found in my other flower bed being one. The shells of the eggs I found are hard like a regular chicken egg, so they must be hen eggs of some sort.

Apparently Foxes and weasels bury foods in various places to store for future feasting.
To our knowledge there’s not any weasels around here, but we do know that there’s a fox in our area. Remember the Red Fox I posted a photo and video of 5-11-2016. We’ve seen a fox a few more times since then, so we suspect that a fox is responsible for the buried eggs.Cool, so the now the mystery is solved. A fox must have left the egg in the woods and is also hiding eggs in my flower beds, it’s strange though, I thought it was only the Easter Bunny that did that. 😀

      I certainly was surprised by it most likely being a fox. I’m like you, fox must have a gentle hold on the shells. Nature is so interesting. It never ceases to amaze me. 🙂

      Bizarre is right. Nature never ceases to amaze me.
      I thought about snakes, but snake eggs are soft and leathery and our mystery eggs have all been hard shell. So that’s why I’m guessing they’re some species of hen egg.

      Nature does have it’s odd dynamics and this is one of them.
      I agree. It would frighten me into being housebound if it was snake eggs. 😀

  5. Hmmm, how about incubating it to see if it hatches? lol unless there IS a chance it is a snake…

    I have never heard of finding eggs in the garden before. Does anyone around you have chickens?

    And kudos to you for just reburying it!

      The eggs are hard shelled and snakes around here are the species that have leathery or soft shell eggs. That’s why I’m guessing the mystery eggs are hen eggs.
      A couple of neighbors have chickens. This is the first year I discovered the buried eggs. Nature never ceases to amaze me.
      I hadn’t considered trying to incubate the eggs. I wouldn’t know how without a willing hen to sit on them. 😉

      I wondered about that too, if the fox remembers where it hid the eggs? I wonder if some day I’ll find my cedar chest planter or my flower bed dug up. If I do, I’ll be posting an update. 😉

  7. Cute! We actually found 4 glass eggs used for making hens ‘sit’ or for darning socks (how many remember their mom’s doing that?) when we dug a trench to build our house 17 years ago. I wonder now if maybe a fox buried its eggs and they became fossils?

      That’s pretty neat about you finding those glass eggs. My Mom had a wooden egg for her hens to sit on.
      I got a good chuckle out of the fossils, but I suppose that could happen. That’d be awesome if they were.

  8. Hi in the last month i have found three brown eggs like ordinary chicken eggs buried in the pots on my garden patio. they are always buried about half way down the depth of the pot or deeper. One was cracked and eventually went bad, inside was just like an ordinary egg,, the second i dropped and the third i still have having found it today. I think peoples comments above about foxes answer my questions as we do have foxes around here but no chickens etc.
