My husband surprised me with several skeins of red metallic yarn. He said that he thought I might want to make something pretty for Christmas out of it.
It took me a couple days to decide on a vest… then I searched for a few more days for different patterns and downloaded several of them and printed them off. I tried them and was not happy with any of them. Then it occurred to me that I can free-hand a vest using an ‘open shell stitch’. Tah – dah and that is what I did.
This vest looks better offline than in the photos.
This vest is a fairly good example of shades of colors. It was made from yarn bought off the same shelf… however, there is a difference that I cannot see, but cameras pick them up.
I’m thankful that, to my eyes, in real life, the vest looks like it’s all the same shade.
Here’s a photo of the skeins I have left. Without the photo, I can’t See the shade differences of the skeins.
Next time before I start a project, I’ll take a photo and see which skeins are shaded. (If I can remember.)
This is hilarious (to me, but I’m old and sometimes easily amused)…
I wanted to get a fairly good photo of the ‘open shells’ to show the stitch is prettier than the photos of the vest show.
So, I laid the vest into the scanner and scanned it. To my surprise, it scanned the upper part to be gold and the lower part to be red. ~hearty chuckle~
Well maybe with all these bad photos, you can get the gist of the colors and the stitch pattern. 😉
Here’s wishing you successful holiday crafting!

That was a sweet gift from your husband! You have enough there to make him a matching hat.

Thanks so much Kathy
He’s a sweet fellow. A hat’s a good idea, I might make one or two since I got enough yarn left.. We shall see, 😀

That’s a lovely vest, E.C., and it was so sweet of your husband to surprise you with yarn! It’s interesting how differently each device perceives the colors–apparently, nothing is absolute. 🙂

Thanks so much Anita,
My husband is a sweetie and I’m so happy he gave me such a fun yarn surprise. 🙂
I think the digital devices different perceptions of colors has been one of the most aggravating parts of the tech-age for me. It’s so rare to get one to show more closely the true colors. Or perhaps it’s my skills at using the devices that causes the color issues. Yep, I think that may be a big part of it. 😉

What a sweet husband. And you did a great jog coming up with a project and using up that yarn right away. Great job! I think it looks fabulous even with the slight variation in color.
That is funny that your scanner picked up the one color as gold!

Thanks so much Ginny,
Yep, he’s a sweetie and made me very happy with this yarn surprise.
Thanks for liking my vest. I’m glad I chose it for this project. I’m satisfied with the way it turned out.
It gave me a good chuckle to see the gold instead of red. Modern technology is full of surprises. 🙂

I love these vests! My grandma used to make them for me years ago. I’d love to have the pattern. Can you point me in the right direction, E.C.? Thanks so much. ❤

Thanks so much Colleen,
Your Grandma sounds like a wonderful lady. I love these kinds of vests too. I’ve just never attempted to make one until now. Unfortunately, I don’t have a pattern. I free handed making this with an open shell stitch. It’s pure luck it turned out fit to wear. 😀
There’s several vests patterns out there. Some of them are really pretty, but mostly above my skill level.
There’s an open stitch vest pattern at:

It kind of favors mine, but it has blocks instead of shells. I like the look of it and may give it a try sometime. ❤

Thanks, E.C. Yup, it’s the open shell stitch one I’m looking for. I’ll see if I can find us a pattern. ❤️

Thanks so much Colleen,
Let me know if you find one. I’d be happy to buy one to make more vests. Free-handing mine did okay, but having a pattern would be so much better. 😀 ❤
