WIP Wednesday – Joy In The Journey Cross Stitch

wip-1-24-2017-aI’m starting this lovely cross stitch titled ‘Joy In The Journey’.  I bought it a year or so ago. Since I enjoyed doing the ‘Cardinal Cross Stitch Hanger’ cross stitch I thought I’d give this a try.

I plan to post my updates of any noticeable progress I make on it.
Here’s what I’ve done so far:
Using my sewing machine, I zig zagged around the edges of the cross stitch cloth so it wouldn’t ravel out.
The fabric had some major creases, so I soaked it in cold soapy water, rinsed it, rung it out rolled up in a towel and ironed it dry.
To find the center, I measured with 2 measuring sticks and made a tiny stitch in the middle mark.
I mounted the cross stitch cloth on a frame with legs that I made out of pvc pipe and pvc joints.
I cross stitched two middle rows of the pattern.
And now my project waits until I’m ready to work on it some more.wip-1-24-2017-b

I hope your week is going well.
Happy crafting!

Random Friday Five – daylily, cross stitch, 3rd man book, clouds & leaves

p1060785One of my daylilies surprised us with a late season bloom. It’s bittersweet knowing it’s probably one of the last blooms of the season.

cardicrosI’ve started a cross stitch project. Decades ago, I enjoyed cross stitch. I wasn’t sure I would enjoy it now. I’m happy to say that I can still do cross stitch and enjoy it. It’s not a big piece, but all the stops and thread changes make my progress slow.
I decided to do a holiday decoration. Hopefully, I’ll have it finished by Christmas and can display it with the other holiday decor.

3rdmanFor me, there’s nothing quite like the feel of an actual physical book. I’ve read many ebooks and have oodles of them through the familiar electronic book distributers, but there’s some books that I prefer to read in the physical form. This is one of those books.

The Third Man Factor By John Geiger
Surviving the Impossible

Hardcover edition 2009
Nonfiction
Stories are based on true events and witness accounts

Comprehension level is moderate.
Type face is good size.

The Third Man Factor is about ‘humans under extreme conditions’ that feel another anomalous person or presence near by. The anomalous 3rd man travels along with them giving them helpful advice and encouragement to survive. The ‘3rd man’ is what the presence is called in the book. The presence may be female. It can be an anomalous person, a relative, friend, angel, guardian, spirit or animal or I suppose just about anything.

Sometimes the ‘person in the extreme condition’ may see the 3rd man in physical form and sometimes even have conversations. Sometimes they communicate telepathy with the 3rd man. Sometimes the 3rd man is a shadowy figure. Sometimes the 3rd man is never seen at all and only felt.

I’m about half way through the book. It’s interesting reading. There’s stories from survivors from many ill fated situations. The book has so far discussed the 3rd man as being a guardian angel, a hallucination or like a spirit.

p1060793We’ve been getting some major glorious cloud formations. I wish I could afford a camera that could produce photos that more successfully shows the gorgeousness of the sky filled with these busy clouds.

Minecraft-TNT tissue box cover finished

IMG_8756I’m happy to say that I finished the Minecraft-TNT tissue box cover I made for my Grandson. I think he’ll like it.

IMG_8765I think that the cover turned out fairly well considering the pattern I made and the changes I made.

After I finished it, I went over the inside with washable glue to seal in the yarn ends. I let it dry thoroughly and then put it on the box.

I guess, tissue box covers are some of the most favorite patterns used by folks. I’m playing with the idea of making a Village out of plastic canvas. There’s so many cottage, house and shop tissue box covers to inspire me that I could probably have a huge community. I may do it eventually.

Do you like doing needlework?
Do you have a favorite pattern?

Wishing you all fun crafting!

Monday Mix

IMG_8752I haven’t excelled at being productive on loom knitting my new blanket. I’ve worked on it a few hours, so far. After this update, I’ve decided to give updates on my blanket only when I’ve made significant progress, so it may be one a month or none-a-month…
But for now, I’ve 14 rows done and happy to have them. The first 10 rows are the toughest (and the last ten).
I’m off to a slow start after 11 days, but at least I’m off to a start. 🙂

IMG_8745I’ve been working on a plastic canvas project for my Grandson. He enjoyed the minecraft blocks that I made for him and I wanted to make him something else. I decided on a tissue box cover and was inspired by a pin on pinterest. I made my own pattern. I enlarged it to where everything is centered and made it large enough to fit a tissue box. I’m working on the top, I hope it goes as well as the sides did.

00IMG_8729I bought a couple new lamps the other day. The main selling feature to me was the swing arm. So, far it’s worked out great. The swing arm helps when I’m reading and crafting.

IMG_87132In sadder news, Sunday 1-11-2015, Rex the triop (tadpole shrimp) lived to the ripe old age of 21 days and then curled up his 80 toes and died. I’m not sure what went wrong with the little feller.
He was a fun new friend and we’ll miss him.
Thursday 1-8-2015, I switched Rex to a beta bowl tank . Rex moulted within a half hour after I put him in the new tank. I figured he would continue to grow larger, so Friday I went to the store and stocked up on distilled water and even bought a small aquarium that’s about a gallon or so. I was saving it for when Rex grew larger, but it won’t happen now… sigh…
I’m going to keep the new tank & water. I might grow some more triops someday and probably will… but not right now… or I might get a guppy… or a beta… we’ll see…

s-1-8-2015Shelibean will miss Rex too. While I tended to Rex each day Sheli would enjoy napping on our spare bed. It was short naps, but enjoy them, he did.

IMG_8695There’s not much going around here lately, except for cold weather. Brrr. We got a dusting of dry snow on 1-7-2015. Over the course of the next few days, the temps got down to as love as 3° during the night. Fortunately, our pipes didn’t freeze.
The temps have warmed back to the mid 20’s to 30’s and if the sun happened to make a rare appearance the temp went up to nigh-on 47°. lol pull out the shorts and the sunscreen… oh yes… lol
I am so ready for Spring!!!

Do you have many projects going at the same time?
Wishing you all a great week!spring-017

Fun with Grandson

IMG_5511Our 13 year old Grandson loves playing minecraft. I noticed the blocks on the game are simple designs (and to my creative mind, begged to be made out of plastic canvas lol) I created simple basic patterns and am pleased with how well they look.
I tried to make a Steve, but I wasn’t happy with the way his head turned out, so I didn’t make him a body. Grandson thinks Steve’s head looks okay and told me I should go ahead and make his body too. He said the game has floating heads in it, so even without a body, my Steve-head worked out okay.
It’s fun to be able to make a craft as an extension of a game or hobby that our Grandson enjoys.

IMG_5388One of the stocking-stuffers that our Grandson got at Christmas was an alien egg.  He had it sitting on a shelf  and decided to it was time to try it out. It’s about the size of a regular plastic Easter egg. The directions are, submerge the egg in water and leave it. After a few days it cracks open and an alien hatches out.
Unfortunately, after a few days, the egg had only started slightly cracking by the time it was for our Grandson to go home, so he took it with him.  I wonder how much longer it’ll take to hatch and what it’ll look like.  Grandson said he’ll try to take a photo of the alien for me to see what it looks like when it’s grown.

IMG_5525Grandson hatched out a bunch of sponge fish from capsules.

IMG_5553Grandson had a wonderful time doing an experiment of Ivory soap puffing up like a cloud when it’s put in the microwave. It was so fun to watch.

IMG_5567aGrandson got creative and made himself a toy gun out of cardboard and masking tape. He made it so it has removable attachments and also the the slider thingy moves too. I think it’s quite clever and imaginative.

IMG_5536We gave a big box of 1 ball squash to our Grandson’s Mother & Maternal-Grandmother.
We still have oodles of squash left and more in the garden. I still have one counter full and my craft table is still full.
Grandson told me that I needed to grow something else in the garden besides squash. He thinks I over-done it. lol
I told him it’s not really my fault because I only have 7 plants and it’s been a really good year for squash. lol

It’s always great fun to spend time with my Grandson,
sharing smiles & making happy memories.cloudhug

Here’s wishing you all a creative rest of the week.
