Shelibean the great hunter

11-9-2013-huntr

Sheli bean has had a rough last month and a half. In the excited joys of play he slipped on the kitchen tile, slid into a door-facing and hurt his back leg.
We carried him to the veterinarian and she said he had a luxating patella (his knee is out of joint), but only on the hurt leg. She prescribed him a nsaid medicine for pain. She said he may need surgery someday later on.

Over the past month and a half Sheli has gotten better and better.
He’s almost back up to par, but he’s still cautious, thank goodness.

While at the vet’s office, Sheli met the first dog he’s seen since he was 7 weeks old. It was a beautiful female white boxer that was about 3 times his size. She was a very docile lovable creature. We were proud of Sheli because he wasn’t afraid and calmly sniffed noses with her.

Yesterday, Sheli reached a milestone that every puppy would be proud to claim: his first critter-capture.
Sheli was on the back-porch with my hubby. After a few minutes of running around Sheli demanded to go back in. Hubby thought Sheli had gotten scared by something. A leaf, the wind, an odd sound anything will send Sheli running for door to come inside. Anyway, hubby let him in. I was working on the laptop in the bedroom. Sheli came in the room with me, ran around a few moments and then went back to the kitchen when hubby came in…
and that’s when hubby noticed that Sheli had a katydid in his mouth…

There was a few moments of excitement and it worried us that the katydid may bite him. Fortunately, Sheli was willing to ‘trade’ the critter for a puparoni snack.
Apparently the katydid was playing opossum because he was still alive and moved his legs slightly when Sheli put him down. You can see it laying beside Sheli in the upper photo.  Hubby took the wee critter outside and set it free.

Sheli was so proud of himself.
So there you have it, Our lovely little fluffy ornament is a natural hunter after all. 🙂

We grew a luffa sponge

This past gardening season my Brother sent me some luffa seeds. I started a few seedlings in trays and I think 3 or 4 survived after planting. The vines grew super long so we had to keep them trimmed back and wound around a fence trellis. They grew and bloomed beautifully, but only one luffa grew throughout the summer until late in the season then there was several growing on the vines.

After the first hard frost the vine died quickly. We harvested a dozen luffa, but 11 of them rotted after a week or so. The very first one that grew throughout the Summer was the only one that matured.

I peeled the dry skin off and got a nice looking luffa sponge and a bunch of seeds.
We’re not going to use it as a sponge though. It’s going to be a conversation piece, just to show folks that you can grow sponges in the garden. 😉

It was a fun novelty vegetable to grow, but we’re not planning on plant any luffas next year. The main reason is wasps, yellow-jackets and bees of all sorts were so thick in the vines, by the end of the season, that it really wasn’t safe to be close to it for more than a few seconds. Also, to grow the luffa right we think that the vines need to be able to run free and not be cut back or wound up like we had them.

On the weekends, I’m going to try to post about things other than Redwork. That way, I’ll have time to embroider new blocks to post about during the week. And perhaps, folks won’t get too bored too quickly with my blog.

I reckon this is all for me at the moment.
Thanks for visiting!
Wishing you all a wonderful & safe weekend!

Redwork block 5 – birdhouse

11-8-2013rwI don’t have any birdhouse stories.  I drew this from the bit of enchantment that comes from enjoying watching birds. I think a occupied bird house is quite charming. 😉

Wishing you all joy & success in crafting.

Redwork block 4 – patches

11-7-2013rwI drew this picture of patches thinking about when I was a little girl perhaps 7 or 8 years old, I had a pair of soft light pink knee-high socks that I absolutely loved. I wore them so much that I wore the heals out of them. Mom sit down with a couple small pieces of soft plaid material and patched the heals of my socks. I was so excited and happy. I wore them until they were so thread bare that Mom finally threw them away.

Wishing you all joy & success in crafting.
