Hornworms & a Female Hummingbird

Hornworms are sphinx moth (hawk moth) caterpillars.
It’s a big beautiful moth. Dark in color and I’ve only seen them in the evening.
Below is a photo I took back in 2017.
mmm. Now that I look through photos in the search engines, I’m not sure this is a sphinx or hawk moth. It was a huge moth though and a pollinator. What kind do you think it is?
The sphinx moth is a pollinator and as is with our gardening methods we left the last 2 tomato plants for the nursery of their Hornworms.
There was originally 3 Hornworms left on the plants and then just these 2.
Then there was just 1 caterpillar and it ran out of cherry tomatoes, so I started feeding it store bought cherry tomatoes. It enjoyed them for a few days and then it disappeared. I figure it left to go into it’s pupae state. I hope that the 3 caterpillars, we let mature, mutate into some healthy pollinators next Spring.
One evening I was washing dishes and saw a wee female hummingbird land on the tomato cage near the last caterpillar. I took a photo through the glass and screen and so the quality isn’t great. However, the size comparison is unsettling. The caterpillar is almost as big as the hummingbird. Just think how dreadful it would be if the caterpillar wasn’t a vegan. 😉

Wishing you all a pleasant weekend!

WildLife Wednesday – The Guilt Feeder

We decided not to hang hummingbird feeders up this year. Then, the other day, whilst we sat on the back porch enjoying a nice early evening breeze, a female Ruby Throated hummingbird flew in and hovered in the exact spot that we hung the feeders in years past.
Seeing the angelic beauty searching for food, made us feel guilty that we hadn’t hung a feeder out yet. So, we went in the house and got the feeder out of storage. My husband fixed a batch of sugar water and then filled the feeder. We went outside and he hung it up. It didn’t take the hummingbird but a few minutes to be on it feeding.
In the following days, there were more hummers visiting the feeders. They buzz and chitter and tease each other. They’re such fun to watch. It’s also fun to see how the feeder looks at different angles; the first photo is my view sitting on the porch looking up at the sky, this second feeder photo is my view of the same feeder from my kitchen window.

Wishing you all an angelic Wednesday!

Tired Little Hummingbird

Yesterday evening I noticed a little male hummingbird sitting very still on our hummingbird feeder. Every few minutes he’d take a sip and then sit still again. He stayed on the feeder for over 30 minutes. We worried he was sick or hurt. Thankfully when the sun set he flew away and seemed to be in fine health. We figure the little guy may have gotten exhausted from the heat of the day and needed to feed and rest to build his energy back up.
He sure was a cutie.

I hope you all have a pleasant weekend.

Five For Friday – hummingbird – carrots – garden news- my clutch pattern

8-18-2016-hummingbirdThere’s an adorable little round hummingbird feeding at our feeders. We’re guessing it may be a baby girl. It sure is cute.

20160819_095857I harvested the rest of the carrots. There wasn’t many. Just enough to freeze for one cooking of a winter soup. Now, when the cold of winter comes knocking, I’m prepared for the first soup of the year made with mostly homegrown ingredients. As delicious as it sounds, I’m not in any hurry to make it though. 😉

P1050128My husband mowed the garden down last weekend. Now it’ll rest until we decide to put in a garden  again somedayP1050024My herb garden hasn’t faired well during the dog days of Summer. The herb garden’s so dry that I doubt any of the herbs survive. Only the rosemarys are hanging on with any sort of chance. I’m especially hoping my ‘Madeline Hill Rosemary’ survives the winter and comes back strong next year. It’s special to me because my Brother sent it to me. If the herbs all die out and don’t come back next Spring, I’ll most likely just plant some annual flowers in the little garden bed. That may be pretty. We’ll see…

00-protoclutchI had enough luck making my clutch/wallet by the McCall’s pattern that I was inspired to make my own version of the pattern. I’m changing up some things like the size, amount of dividers and how it goes together. This is my first try, a proto-type. It didn’t turn out like I wanted. It’s warped and misshapen, However, I learned a thing or two about what I need to do to make the next one better. That’s the creating process.

I hope you all had a wonderful gardening season and your flowers, vegetables or herbs were a success.

Have a great weekend!

The Wild Life Of July 4th Weekend

IMG_4454Our weekend didn’t really start off on a positive note. We had an invasion of tiny sugar ants. Oh my them buggers were into everything. We cleared out everything from the cabinets and cleaned out all the ants we could catch with our clorox wipes. We then sprinkled Food Grade Diatomaceous Earth in the cabinets to keep the ants controlled until we were able to get to the store and buy some bug spray. We vacuumed up the DE and my husband gave the cabinets a good spraying. We let them set for a couple of days. Until yesterday, my counter tops and dining room table was crowded with the contents from the lower cabinets and it was a relief to finally be able to put the stuff back in the cabinets. I used a bottom half of a shoe box to make it easier to tote more stuff at once back to the cabinets. When we were done. I left the box in the floor with the intention of tossing it away later.
We sit down to enjoy a sandwich and a much deserved break. I looked over a noticed Sheli jumped in the box and dug at the bottom, circled a few times and then snuggled down for a nap. I grabbed my camera and clicked off 4 photos, but only one turned out. It’s cute though.
Sheli in the box reminded me of a post my blogging buddy Barbara made about animals called “If it Fits, I Sit” it was such a cheerful collection of animals sitting/laying in the oddest containers and places.

IMG_4426On the bright side, We were blessed with a gorgeous weekend. The blue sky was filled with clouds and contrails and sometimes nothing at all. The temps were really nice and allowed us to spend more time outside than normal. The 4th we sat out and watched fireworks from the surrounding neighborhoods. Oddly there was a chill in the air and we had to wear our heavy jackets. I don’t think I remember a night so cold in July before. It was an enjoyable evening just the same.IMG_4390

IMG_4644The resident wild life was in their best element this weekend. I was right about the Doe that I mentioned in an earlier post that I thought was with-fawn. We saw her and her fawn at end of our property.  It was enchanting. The fawn is such a comical character. I took several photos from my kitchen looking out through screened windows.  I zoomed in on them as best as I could, but the photos didn’t turn out very well. I wanted to show this one to you because I may not get anymore photos of the baby. You never know when it’ll be by when I have my camera on hand. The fawn is peeking out from the other side under  his Mom. He’s small enough that we almost didn’t see him.

IMG_4516I saw one of the garden bunnies sitting near the garden. I thought something was wrong with it’s head, it’s cheek looked really swollen. I clicked off a few photos and hurriedly loaded them on my pc to see what was wrong with the bunny. Well, it had a big mouth of grass and so explains the puffy cheeks. lol

IMG_4669One of the local male hummingbirds lit in our pear tree. He stayed still just long enough for me to click off one photo. Luckily it’s turned out okay enough to post on my blog.

IMG_4568And last but not least, we had a surprise visit from Screech. We were so happy to see him. I’m pleased as peaches to get this one good shot of him watching my husband gathering our gardening tools together.
Last evening, my husband noticed that Screech was sleeping in the cubby-hole again. We figure the first brood of screechlettes have been born and raised and Mr. Screech is nest-testing again. We figure he’s trying his best to convince the Mrs. to move to our barn… or he had enough of the wife and kids and took a much needed little vacation in our barn. lol
Click here to see a few more photos of Screech and him in his cubby-hole.

Screech’s visit could explain why we didn’t see any squirrels this weekend. I reckon they ran for cover so they wouldn’t become owl fodder. Smart little furries, they are. 😉

We had an enjoyable critter-filled weekend here my neck of the woods.

I hope you all had a pleasant weekend &
got a chance to enjoy the great outdoors.
