6 Black Swallowtail butterflies have emerged from their chrysalises. They’re so quick and sneaky that I haven’t had the priviledge of watching any of them emerge.
There are 3 males and 3 females. That’s pretty neat to have an even split.
There’s 1 chrysalis to go. It’s getting super dark and clearish. At this stage you can kind of see the yellow speckles of the wings. I figure it’ll hatch(?) within the next 24 hours.
It’s been very interesting dealing with the birthing of butterflies. However, I don’t plan to bring anymore caterpillars in this year. I’ve read that at some point the black swallowtail caterpillars build chrysalises to overwinter (diapause). I don’t know when that’ll be, so I’m not going to chance it. I figure they’d be better off overwintering out in nature the way God designed them too.
The butterflies have been an enjoyable part of this 4th of July holiday. I’m happy our Grandson got to see the chrysalises and new butterflies. It was an extra bit of fun to share.

So beautiful! I never knew they would build chrysalises over winter, but I suppose it makes sense. They don’t migrate like monarchs so they need to do something for surviving the cold winter months! They are hard to catch when they emerge/”hatch” and it happens so quickly, if you turn away for just a few seconds you will miss it!

I spent yesterday with my camera pointed at the last chrysalis. It took all day waiting but finally I have successfully got a video of the actual emergence from a chrysalis. It emerged when my Grandson called and my attention was away from watching the chrysalis. It’s a good thing I left my camera on movie mode. Sneaky little bugger. It’s not the best movie, but I’m happy to have it. I plan to post it here some day soon. It’s been fun and I’m happy all the chrysalises have hatched(?) 🙂

What fun! I have read about Chrysalis Cam for recording all the action. This was a great learning experience for your grandson.

We enjoyed sharing our butterfly experience with our Grandson. Even though he’s 16 and knew the basics of butterflies, I think this was his first experience with seeing them actually going through the stages to become beauties. We love having these times together. 🙂
