4-2-2024 Gardening – greenhouse and more

My husband put up my small greenhouse. I’ll be trying to start some seeds soon. Even though it’s small, I really enjoy having it. I like that after I’m finished with it for the season, we can fold it up and store until next year.

I bought some ‘bright lights chard’ and ‘romaine lettuce’ to put in my greenhouse. It makes me happy to see the healthy plants in there. If we don’t eat them all first, I’ll transplant them to a pot and/or the garden.

I’m trying to get a few cuttings of roses, that were in my bouquet, to take root. There was one carnation stem that had buds, so I thought I’d give it a try too. I seriously doubt that any of them will take root, but it’s fun to try.
For the first time in my life, I used a root-starter to give the cuttings a better chance. So, maybe one will take root. I’ll let you know how they do.

We spent this past weekend working in the garden. My husband tilled the garden a few times, fertilized it and tilled it again, then made a few rows for me to plant onions and potatoes. We’re hopeful, we have a good foundation for a productive year, (if the weather and garden-pests play nice. 😉 )

Wishing you all an April full of pleasant weather and relaxing days!

7-7-2023-Garden News

Just a quick post to give a garden update. Our cucumbers, squash, chard and onions has been really productive. We have plenty for us and we’ve shared alot with a few folks too. We enjoy being able to share our bounty.

I wish you all a bountiful weekend of joy and happiness.

Special Garden Visitors – Black Swallowtail Butterfly – caterpillar

We decided to do away with a couple of our flowerbeds and let the areas go back to yard. My husband took the soil from the flowerbeds and put it on our garden. The result from adding the soil to our garden is volunteer zinnias growing sporadically throughout the rows among the vegetables.
The other day, I was taking pictures, with my phone, of a lovely patch of zinnias growing in our carrots and cucumbers. A beautiful female Black Swallowtail Butterfly was feeding on the blooms. I managed a few photos, hoping one of them would be fine. I wasn’t sure about the zoom feature, but it turned out okay.
Yesterday, as I was looking to see if the carrot tops had actual carrots making under any of them. I was surprised to see an adorable black swallowtail caterpillar feeding quietly on a carrot top. I was so excited.
Unfortunately, it was fixing to rain, and I didn’t have my camera, so I rushed (not ran lol) to the house and grabbed my phone and rushed back to the garden. I snapped a few photos and rushed back to the house just in the nick-of-time as the rain began to pour. Considering my rushing, this photo turned out pretty good.

I’m so happy I got to see the caterpillar. Unfortunately, because of birds, I fear the caterpillar won’t make it to be a butterfly. Then again, it might, I wouldn’t have thought a caterpillar could’ve made it to the size it has.
I considered taking the caterpillar home with me and finish it’s raising in an aquarium like I did with some back a half dozen years ago, but I just don’t have the heart to take it away from the fresh air, rain, sunshine and fresh carrot tops. Here’s a link to one of my blog posts during my butterfly raising adventures: Black Swallowtail Butterfly Lifecycle

*Just a note here:
I know the caterpillars will happily eat the carrot tops to the ground. We’ve plenty of carrots growing and it’s not an issue if we lose a few of them.

Here’s wishing you all beautiful butterflies and smiles.
Have a wonderful weekend!

Crochet – diamond painting – garden – pc issues

I wasn’t happy with my crochet shawl project. I unraveled it and started again with a c2c v-stitch pattern. It’s taken me some time to work it out, but so far, it’s going well.

I finished my diamond painting. I’ve decided not to frame/hang it up. I’ve added it to our portfolio folder-notebook. I used to just roll up the finished diamond paintings (dps) and keep them on a shelf. Whenever we’d want to look at them, I’d have to unroll them all, then roll them back up. It was okay, but not really enjoyable.
Fortunately, my blogging buddy Claire mentioned on her blog how she keeps her dps in a portfolio. It’s such a great idea. I leapt on that idea and ordered us one. The portfolio can hold 60 or more depending on size. That works our great for us.
“Thank you so much, Claire. You’ve helped make our diamond painting more enjoyable. ❤ ”

My husband is really in the gardening mood this year. He tilled up a small garden spot. I might add that since he tilled the garden spot, we’ve had several rainstorms and the temperatures have been running as low as in the mid 20°F. So, for now, we wait… Come on warm weather and some dry days to plant!

I wish all of you oodles of nice Spring weather.
Have a super rest of the week!

P.S. I’ve ran into some pc issues the past few weeks. I’ve pretty much got them worked out. A new battery and a factory reset did the trick. Hopefully, it’ll be smoother sailing for a while. Now it’s time to play catch-up on my visiting and blogging. 🙂
